“Formed in 2010 in Burbank California, The Never Never were a group of best friends getting back into music. In 2012 they moved to 2121 N. San Fernando Rd. in east L.A. into a loft that was once a former Capitol Records pressing plant(1). In this loft, rooms were built from new and scrap wood, along with a tiny recording studio where this demo was made. They played shows around California and toured the west coast of the United States.
In the mid 2010’s, while moving from L.A. to Seattle, a box containing the hard drives of all the masters from this and previous Never Never albums fell out of the truck and was destroyed. I was told this by Seth as we reconnected after many years of being out of touch. I dug through a hard drive of old work and found that I happened to have not only all the old Never Never songs, but the demo recordings from this unfinished album. After sitting quiet for a decade and looking back, knowing all that had happened to this group of friends since recording the demos, Seth and I realized how special this demo was.
The cassette is made from recycled plastic and housed in a sculpture made from scrap off-cut pieces of wood, making each one different. The rounded corners and circle window mimic features of the Capitol building. The “wrapping” contains one side of fliers and posters from shows, tours, and shirts from this period of time and can be re-folded or wrapped around the cassette inside the sculpture avoiding any waste. No new materials or tools were purchased for the creation of this packaging, and the sawdust collected from the creation of it will be used in a mixture for a future Colony Collapse release.
